BUTTERBRO
CREATIVE / MUSIC | 2024 | Von Josua Waghubinger
An AI-generated song that hit #48 on the German Top 100 — and rewrote what I thought a one-person release could do.

01 — Origin
It started at 1 a.m. on a Tuesday. I was tired, half-curious, and had just been given access to Udio. I typed a prompt about a guy with a crush on a "Talahon" — German slang none of my American AI tools would have recognized. Pressed generate. Went to make tea.
By the time the kettle whistled, the song was on my laptop. Catchy. Almost insulting in how catchy.
I uploaded it to Spotify under a fake artist name. I expected nothing.
02 — Build
Udio was the engine. Everything else was glue: a small Python script that auto-uploaded variants, a Notion board for ideas, and the habit of generating ten variants a night and trusting my gut on which one to release.
The trick wasn't the AI — that part was easy. The trick was knowing what would land in this specific cultural moment.
03 — Launch
I posted a fifteen-second clip. No promo budget, no PR. Within 36 hours, three different German radio stations had played it. Within a week, parody covers were trending. By day ten, lawyers from a major label had emailed me twice.
04 — Aftermath
The Spotify Global Viral chart is brutal. Songs cycle through it every 48 hours. Butterbro stayed at #3 for seven days straight — long enough that it became a small archival entry in chart history.
05 — Lessons
Three things, briefly. First: the gatekeepers are slower than they think. Second: a song made with a model can absolutely move people, but only if the cultural reference is sharp. Third: this wasn't a stunt. It was an experiment that shipped, found its audience, and taught me what to do next.
